The Los Angeles Angels (50-64 SU, 63-51 ATS) conclude their road series with the New York Yankees (68-47 SU, 61-54 ATS) in a situation where they can only play spoiler. The Angels have been long irrelevant in the playoff race this season, but they have shown some fight at times.
Oddly, they’ve been almost as good on the road as they’ve been at home, and Tyler Anderson has been much better away from home than at Angel Stadium. Anderson hasn’t lost a start on the road since May 6, and the Angels are 5-0 in his past five road starts. He’s been the winning pitcher in four of those starts, with the lone exception coming in a no-decision at Seattle on July 22. Even though the Angels haven’t been good this year, Anderson gives them a chance whenever he’s not at home.

The Yankees have responded well to being in a tight division race, but Nestor Cortes Jr. hasn’t answered the bell to this point. Initially, it seemed like his problems were because of facing the Tampa Bay Rays, who have dominated him all season, but he’s now pitched poorly against Boston and Philadelphia on top of his usual rough outing against the Rays.
Cortes Jr. has allowed at least three runs in six of his past seven starts, and only two of those outings came against Tampa Bay. The Yankees have paid the price for Cortes’ inability to get the job done, as they’ve been on the losing end of six of his past seven starts. Only the Phillies game landed in the win column, and only because the Yankee bats bailed Cortes out. Against Anderson, that seems far less likely to work. Our prediction for Los Angeles vs. New York is for the Angels to win.
