After bagging the men’s singles bronze at the Olympics, Lorenzo Musetti hopes to maintain his winning form leading up to US Open Championships roughly two weeks from now. On Wednesday, the Italian will go up against Frances Tiafoe of the United States in the first round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Musetti, 22, overcame some on-court rustiness, surviving a first-round scare from Nicolas Jarry of Chile 4-6 7-6(5) 7-6(4). The Italian posted 9 aces and 104 points, 53 of which were scored off his first serves. After dropping the first set, Musetti willed himself through two nail-biting tiebreakers in the second and deciding sets to avoid a first-round exit narrowly. Musetti’s next opponent won’t be a pushover either, as he will take on a familiar foe in Frances Tiafoe. The American reached the semi-finals of the Citi Open in Washington, where he lost to Sebastian Korda 6-4, 6-4. Tiafoe also competed at the 2024 Montreal Masters, but he got eliminated early after losing to Alejandro Tabilo of Chile 6-4 6-2 in the first round.
