On Tuesday, former US Open finalist Leylah Fernandez of Canada will open her campaign at the 2025 Abu Dhabi Open against Moyuka Uchijima of Japan. Fernandez had a so-so three-week campaign in the Land Down Under, reaching the third round of the Australian Open and leaving the Aussie swing of the WTA Tour with a 5-3 record. It has been quite some time since Fernandez hoisted a WTA title above her head. The Canadian won her last title on the tour at the 2023 Hong Kong Open, defeating Katerina Siniakova in the finals 3–6, 6–4, 6–4. Uchijima continues to struggle with inconsistency, going 2-5 through her first seven matches of the 2025 WTA season. The Japanese secured a breakthrough win at the Australian Open after upsetting Magda Linette in a three-set match. She also came close to stunning No.14 seed Mirra Andreeva 6-4 3-6 7-6(8) in another three-set classic in the second round. She avenged her loss from Gadecki by beating her in the Q1 of the Mubadala Abu Dhabi Open 7-5 6-2. Uchijima lost her final qualifier match against Sonay Kartal of Great Britain 6-1 6-4 but luckily, she secured a lucky loser nod.

Our Leylah Annie Fernandez vs Moyuka Uchijima Prediction
Leylah Fernandez, the No.8 seed in the tournament, should have no problem shaking off Moyuka Uchijima in straight sets. The former US Open winner owns a 62.2 percent win rate on hard courts, and despite an up-and-down campaign in 2024, she still managed to finish the year with a winning record at 18-15. On the other hand, Uchijima gas a 58.5 percent win rate on hard surfaces but only boasts three wins in 18 matches against the top 50 players on the WTA Tour. Another reason to double down on a Fernandez win is she has already defeated the Japanese. She beat her 6-2 6-2 at a Challenger tournament in 2019. Our betting prediction for Leylah Fernandez vs. Moyuka Uchijima: Leylah Fernandez will win 2-0.
