The Lafayette Leopards (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS) face off with the Buffalo Bulls (0-0 SU, 0-0 ATS), looking to pull off their first upset of an FBS team in over half a century. Lafayette was the surprise of FCS last year, as the Leopards transformed from a four-win squad in 2022 to a playoff team in 2023. They won nine games and the Patriot League title, which is a terrible omen for Buffalo.
The Bulls are all too familiar with the Patriot League, having lost to a Patriot League squad in each of the past two seasons. Maurice Linguist saw the writing on the wall and bolted for an assistant’s job at Alabama, leaving the western New York rebuild to former Ball State coach Pete Lembo. To bring the Bulls back, Lembo will have to fix the offense fast. Buffalo averaged just 20.9 points per game, and the Bulls return just three starters from last year’s team.

JaMar Curtis is a legit running back. He was in the mix for the Walter Payton Award last year (most outstanding offensive player in FCS) and figured to be a key part of the Lafayette offense again. The Buffalo run defense wasn’t very good in either of the past three seasons, allowing roughly five yards per carry under Linguist.
Lembo’s track record suggests a stronger defensive effort, but the Bulls don’t have anyone they can trust on the other side of the football. Buffalo’s offense failed to break 14 points in six MAC games last season, including all four played at home. The Bulls just couldn’t get drives going, and they couldn’t get opposing offenses off the field fast enough. Against a veteran Lafayette squad, Buffalo faces a tough assignment that’s likely to come down to the last play. Our prediction for Lafayette vs. Buffalo is Lafayette +3.5.
