The Kansas Jayhawks (1-0 SU, 0-1 ATS) face their first real test of the season as they meet the Illinois Fighting Illini (1-0 SU, 1-0 ATS) in a rematch of last year. Last season, Kansas showed it was to be taken seriously when it jumped out to a 21-0 lead on Illinois, leaving the Jayhawks in firm control the rest of the way.
Illinois’ offense got started late, but once you fall behind against Kansas, it’s very difficult to get back in the game. The Jayhawks rolled up 262 rushing yards, the most anyone gained against Illinois in 2023. While the linebackers are all back from last season, none of the three defensive linemen return for the Illini. Considering that was the strength of the Illinois defense in 2023, that’s worrisome.

The key to this game will be whether Illinois can stop Devin Neal. Kansas runs the ball early and often whenever it has success, as the Jayhawks’ best games of the previous season came when they moved the ball on the ground. Last year, Kansas had seven games where it averaged better than five yards per carry, and the Jayhawks went 6-1 in those contests.
Illinois believes it has a better offense and can keep pace with Kansas. But it’s difficult to keep pace when your defense is getting worn down by the ground game. The Fighting Illini might have fixed their issues on the offensive side of the ball, but they don’t appear to have done enough defensively to slow down Kansas.
