Marcos Giron of the United States is set to face a tricky opponent in the first round of the 2024 Paris Masters, taking on Chinese rising star Shang Juncheng on Monday. The 31-year-old Giron only reached the second round of the Erste Bank Open after making it all the way to the semifinal of the 2024 European Open. The ATP veteran had blasted Hugo Gaston 6-2, 6-2 in the first round of the indoor event in Vienna before he ran into No.1 seed Alexander Zverev in the next round. Giron tried to make his match with Zverev as competitive as possible, especially in the second set, but the German was too good. Juncheng qualified for the main draw of the Paris Masters after edging James Duckworth 6-7(2) 7-6(5) 6-4 and Zizou Bergs 6-4 3-6 7-6(2) in three sets. The 19-year-old Chinese created a lot of buzz in China a month ago after beating the likes of Kei Nishikori, Roman Safiullin, Alexander Bublik, and Lorenzo Musetti to win the Chengdu Open. He became the second Chinese men’s singles player to win an ATP-level tournament in the Open Era.
