Juncheng Shang vs Kei Nishikori Prediction & Picks - ATP Chengdu Open
by Lou Aguila | in Tennis Picks
Former US Open runner-up Kei Nishikori should expect a hostile crowd on Thursday as he battles China’s Shang Juncheng in the first round of the 2024 Chengdu Open. Fresh off a 6-4, 6-4 win over Nicolas Meija of Colombia in the Davis Cup, Nishikori will try to sustain his good form and deliver good results in this ATP 250 event. Gone were the days when he was a perennial quarterfinalist in Grand Slam events, the 24-year-old Nishikori is a shell of his former self, having dropped to the world’s No. 205 in the latest rankings. On the other hand, beating the former world’s No.4 Nishikori, regardless of his current form, would still be a huge achievement for the 19-year-old Shang. The young Chinese has accomplished several milestones this year, including a round-of-32 stint at the French and US Open.

Our Juncheng Shang vs Kei Nishikori Prediction
Nishikori’s straight-set victory over Meija at the Davis Cup could indicate that the Japanese has regained 60 to 70 percent of the form that helped him reach the quarterfinal of the Canadian Open. Skipping the US Open to play in a couple of clay-court Challenger Level tournaments might be a dubious decision by Nishikori. Still, there is something to feel good about it since he reached the quarterfinals of both tournaments. Shang is an exciting young talent from China and I believe he will be a force to be reckoned with on the ATP Tour in the coming years. However, I am still picking Nishikori to win. Apart from beating Shang 6-4 7-6(3) in their first meeting at the 2023 Truist Atlanta Open, Nishikori has played some of his best tennis in years lately. I expect the 34-year-old veteran to use every bit of his experience to control the game and squeeze out a win over Shang. Our betting prediction for Kei Nishikori vs. Shang Juncheng: Bet on Nishikori to win, +140, at BetMGM.
