Brazilian sensation Joao Fonseca will go head-to-head with another promising star from Denmark, Elmer Moller, in the first round of the 2025 Mutua Madrid Masters.
Fonseca is set to kick off his European clay-court season campaign on Thursday after putting together a terrific first quarter of 2025. Coming into the Madrid Masters with already a clay-court title under his belt and a bevy of passionate fans, Fonseca is widely viewed as a dark horse contender in this prestigious ATP 1000 tournament. The Brazilian is coming off a third-round finish at the Miami Open, where he held his own in a loss to top-10 contender Alex De Minaur 5-7 7-5 6-3.
Standing across the net is Denmark’s newest prodigy, Elmer Moller. The 21-year-old Dane has won his last seven matches on clay, including a 5-7 6-4 6-4 win over Kamil Majchrzak of Poland to qualify for the main draw in Madrid. Moller currently sits outside the ATP top-100 at No.114, but a win over Fonseca would greatly boost his current rankings.

I don’t think Fonseca will have an easy time against Moller, who has won his last seven matches on clay and nine of his last 10 on the surface. Fonseca is a terrific young talent with ridiculous upside, but he has yet to establish consistency in getting strong results from the tournaments he competes in. Moller started the year slowly but has now caught fire in the past weeks, which saw him beating the likes of Francisco Comesana, Thiago Montiero, and Roman Safiullin to win the Oeiras Challenger 4.
