Fresh from winning the 2024 National Bank Open, Jessica Pegula begins her quest for another WTA 1000 title on Thursday when she plays Karolina Muchova of Czech Republic in the second-round of the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Pegula has successfully defended the National Bank Open title in Toronto, outgunning compatriot Amanda Anisimova 6-3 2-6 6-1 in the finals. Pegula won 84 points in the championship match, 34 of which coming from her first serves and 38 from return points. She also broke Anisimova’s serves four times and recorded six aces. Pegula now has three WTA 1000 tournament titles, and she has another chance to add one more if she wins this tournament as well. Muchova made it to the second round of the Cincinnati Open behind a 7-6(6) 6-2 win over Dayana Yastremska of Ukraine. Muchova controlled the flow of the match by winning 28 points on her first serves and breaking her opponent four times. The 27-year-old Czech reached the semifinals of the 2023 US Open last year, but a wrist injury forced her to miss a number of the tournaments in the 2024 WTA calendar.
