Jessica Pegula of the United States begins her campaign on the red dirt of Madrid against Eva Lys of Germany in the second round of the Mutua Madrid Open on Friday.
Pegula eyes a deeper run in Madrid following a quarterfinal finish at the 2025 Stuttgart Open. After racking up six consecutive wins on clay and a title at Charleston, the top American bombed out in the final eight at Stuttgart, losing to Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-0 6-4.
Lys arranged a second-round clash with Pegula after hacking out a 6-2 6-2 win over Teodoro Kostovic of Serbia. The young German produced 20 points off her first serves and broke Kostovic six times in the match. The German lost to Jasmine Paolini 6-2 6-1 in the first round of the Stuttgart Open but had a quarterfinal run at an ITF event in La Bisbal D'Emporda.
