Osaka of Japan will try to recapture the form that made her a two-time US Open Champion as she braces for a tough first-round showdown with fellow Grand Slam winner Jelena Ostapenko of Latvia on Tuesday at Louis Armstrong Stadium in Flushing Meadows, New York. Osaka, who lorded over the women’s singles event in 2018 and 2020, will begin her campaign for a third USOP crown against an opponent with a championship pedigree. It has been a challenging 2024 season for Osaka, who is still looking for her first title this year. Ranked No.85 in the WTA World Rankings, the Japanese had underwhelming results during the US Open warmups, reaching only the second round of the Canadian Open and failing to advance into the main draw of the Cincinnati Open. Similar to Osaka, Ostapenko didn’t have an ideal North American hard-court season run. The Latvian could only play in the third round of the Canadian Open and the second round of the Cincinnati Open before she got eliminated from these tourneys.
