The Paraguayan soccer team surprised everyone in the pre-Olympic tournament held in Venezuela where they managed to qualify together with Argentina in a qualifying round that left out Brazil, which won the gold medal in Tokyo in the last Olympics. Paraguay completed 20 years of absence from Olympic football, but the last time it qualified, in the 2004 Athens edition, the Paraguayans achieved a memorable and notable performance where they took the Olympic silver by losing the final to Argentina.

Japan has become a regular participant representing Asia in the Olympic Games. In the last games where Tokyo was the venue, the Japanese Olympic team played an impressive and perfect group game where they took 9 points and beat France 4-0. They were eliminated by the eventual country that would take the Gold, Spain, and in the bronze medal game they lost against Mexico even though they had beaten them in the group stage. Some very important players in the Japanese squad will not be there, such as Kubo, who was not allowed to attend by Real Sociedad.

Paraguay will not be favorites in the betting for the opening match against Japan, but the Guaraníes were never favorites in the pre-Olympic and still surprised.
