Novak Djokovic is still in the running for a record-tying 8th Wimbledon Open title after staving off a fierce challenge from Alexie Popyrin of Australia 4-6, 6-3, 6-4, 7-6(3) in their third-round clash last Saturday. Djokovic engaged in a highly-entertaining four-set duel with Great Britain’s Jacob Fearnley 6-3 6-4 5-7 7-5, and then less than 48 hours later, rallied from a 0-1 set deficit to beat Popyrin in another grueling four-set match. Rune also had to overcome a couple of upset scares to reach this point in the tournament. The three-time Grand Slam quarterfinalist easily defeated Soon-Woo Kwon 6-1 6-4 6-4 before scrapping a 3-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over Thiago Seyboth Wild in the second round. The Dane demonstrated his resilience and calmness in his third-round match against qualifier Quentin Halys, rallying from a 0-2 set disadvantage to win 1-6 6-7(4) 6-4 7-6(4) 6-1 and advance to the round of 16.
