Jack Draper of Great Britain vies for his first ATP 1000 title as he goes up against Holger Rune of Denmark in the men’s singles championship match at the 2025 Indian Wells Open.
Draper had the tennis world shaken on Saturday when he ended Carlos Alcaraz’s 16-match winning streak at Indian Wells with a 6-1 0-6 6-4 stunner. The Brit caught Alcaraz flatfooted in the opening salvos, as he stormed to a 3-0 lead and then won three more after the Spaniard held serves in the fourth game to secure the first set. Alcaraz appeared to have changed the tide of the match after unleashing a furious onslaught that left Draper helpless and scoreless in the second. Momentum swung like a pendulum in the third set but the turning point came in the 7th game when Draper outlasted Alcaraz in a back and forth tussle to notch a pivotal 5-2 lead in the decider.
Rune, on the other hand, vanquished Daniil Medvedev in the other semis pairing 7-5 6-4. After rallying from a set down to beat Tallon Griekspoor in the quarterfinals 5-7 6-0 6-3, Rune made sure he would not face the same scenario again, erasing a 4-5 deficit by rattling off three consecutive games to take the first set. After a Medvedev hold in the opening game of the second set, the Dane stormed to a 3-1 lead with two holds and a break. He held serves the rest of the way to complete the upset of the No.5 seed Medvedev.

Rune enters the final match with Draper as the more experienced player at this tournament stage. The Brit has been terrific in the past two weeks and deserves recognition as the man who ended Carlos Alcaraz’s 16-match win streak at Indian Wells. However, I don’t think he will have a start as dominant as he had against Alcaraz in Sunday’s championship match against Rune. The Dane is a complete player armed with a vast repertoire of shots, allowing him to switch tactics on the fly to effectively counter his opponents’ playing style.
The Dane has this annoying habit of not going all-out in the early rounds, which usually leads to upsets. However, Rune turns into a different player once he reaches the championship rounds. The guy has a career 13-9 record in title matches and 1-0 head-to-head against Draper, whom he swept in the quarterfinal of the 2024 Cincinnati Open. Draper might be the toast of tennis right now, but It’s hard for me to count out Rune, who is set to play in his fourth ATP 1000 final.
