Purdue handled Gonzaga by 10 in Hawaii earlier this season, and the Boilermakers did it by throwing off the Bulldogs’ shooters. Gonzaga hit just 19% from behind the arc and got to the foul line just eight times in that game, leading to Purdue pulling away and beating the Bulldogs for the second straight year.
For the year, Purdue has appeared to raise its game when facing the best of the best. Of the 15 other teams still left in the tournament, Purdue has gone up against six of them and owns a 7-0 record and a 5-1-1 ATS mark against those squads.

The key to the first meeting was Purdue center Zach Edey stepping out on shooters and Gonzaga wearing down in the face of Purdue’s depth. Both teams have improved since that November meeting, but the advantages the Boilermakers had back in Hawai’i still exist today. Gonzaga has yet to find an answer for Edey, and Purdue has more than enough shooters to cause the Bulldogs to tire out.
Both teams regularly end their possessions with shots, which means that both defenses are going to make the other work constantly to try to figure things out. That wears on a team, which favors the side that has more bodies to spare. Purdue also holds a big edge with its shooting, as the Boilers’ 3-point assault ranks second in the country and Gonzaga sits outside the top 100 at stopping the 3-pointer. Because of the Boilers’ depth and scoring ability, our prediction for Gonzaga vs. Purdue is Purdue -5.
