Germany vs Scotland Prediction & Picks - Euro

by Simon Day | in Euro Picks

Euro 2024 gets underway this Friday with a mouthwatering clash between host nation Germany and Scotland in Munich. Despite mixed form over the last couple of years, Germany go into the tournament as third favorites behind France and England, so expectations will be sky high among fans of Die Mannschaft. With the likes of Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer and Thomas Muller likely to be playing in their final major tournament, this represents a last chance of glory for some of the nation's most legendary players.

As for Scotland, they will be looking to reach the knockout stage of a major tournament for the first time ever. However, this opening game represents an extremely tough task. Anything other than defeat will be seen as a huge success for Steve Clarke's men.

Germany - Scotland: Form Analysis

Six months ago, the mood among German fans was at an all time low. After a terrible 2022 World Cup, they won just three of their 11 games in 2023. That included dismal defeats to the likes of Poland and Turkey, as well as a humiliating 1-4 home defeat to Japan. However, new boss Julian Nagelsmann has turned things around in 2024. March victories over France and the Netherlands were extremely encouraging, and although the warm up displays against Ukraine (0-0) and Greece (2-1) were less impressive, fans are now hopeful that the team can make this a home tournament to remember.

Scotland's form over the last two years has been the complete opposite of Germany's. After a fantastic start to qualification, which they saw win their opening five games, they have hit the buffers in the last 12 months.

Scotland's form over the last two years has been the complete opposite of Germany's.

Last week's friendly win over Gibraltar is their only success since September, and they have produced a string of poor performances in that time. Their final warm up game saw them draw 2-2 with Finland after surrendering a two goal lead.

Friday's game will be the first Germany-Scotland match-up for nine years. Germany are currently on a three games winning streak in the rivalry, whilst they also lead the overall head-to-head by eight wins to four.

Germany & Scotland Squad Analysis

Germany have a virtually clean bill of health ahead of their first game. Midfielder Aleksander Pavlovic is the only concern, as he is reportedly suffering with tonsillitis. But in truth, he was highly unlikely to have made the starting lineup anyway. The big decisions for Nagelsmann are in attack, where he must decide between Kai Havertz, Thomas Muller and Niclas Fullkrug. Havertz seems most likely to get the start, and will play ahead of the exciting trio of Ilkay Gundogan, Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala. The midfield and defense virtually pick themselves, which means Neuer and Kroos will enjoy a final chance to shine on the big stage.

Neuer and Kroos will enjoy a final chance to shine on the big stage.

Scotland are likely to deploy a five man defense for the game, with a four man midfield and one lone attacker. Lyndon Dykes was in pole position to take the number nine role, but a freak injury means Che Adams and Lawrence Shankland are competing for the starting spot. With no injury concerns since naming his squad, manager Steve Clarke seems likely to select his tried and trusted performers in midfield and defense.

Germany - Scotland Key Points

Our Germany vs Scotland Prediction

Opening games can be notoriously tough to predict. However, we think that Germany will want to make a big statement in front of their home fans. That could spell trouble for a Scotland side lacking in form and confidence. We are expecting Kai Havertz to get the nod up front for Germany, and with the Arsenal man enjoying a fine end to the season, he will have an excellent chance of getting his name on the scoresheet.  Our prediction for Germany vs Scotland is: Germany to win and Kai Havertz to score, +160 at BetMGM.

Germany vs Scotland - Other Interesting Picks

Toni Kroos first goalscorer

German midfielder Toni Kroos will be retiring from all football at the end of the tournament. Naturally, he will want to finish in style and we think that could start with a goal on opening night. The Real Madrid legend is likely to be on free kick duties for the Germans, which could present him with some excellent goalscoring chances.

Germany to win and over 3.5 goals

The last time Germany hosted a major tournament (World Cup 2006), they opened proceedings with a thrilling 4-2 win over Costa Rica. We think fans could be in for another high scoring encounter this time around. Scotland have kept just one clean sheet (aginst Gibraltar) in their last seven games, whilst key German attackers such as Kai Havertz and Niclas Fullkrug are in excellent form.
