Germany vs Hungary Prediction & Picks - Euro
by Simon Day | in Euro Picks
Germany will book their place in the second round of Euro 2024, if they defeat a Hungary side looking to bounce back from a 3-1 defeat to Switzerland. German expectations were relatively low coming into the tournament, but the opening day demolition of Scotland has got fans believing that a first European trophy in 28 years could be on the way. With young stars like Jamal Musiala and Florian Wirtz causing chaos in attacking areas, plus the experience of Toni Kroos pulling the strings in midfield, this looks like a German side ready to mount a serious challenge for glory.
The defeat to Switzerland has left Hungary in a very precarious position. Another defeat on game day 2 would put their qualification hopes in serious peril, even if they were to defeat Scotland in their final game. On the plus side, the second half display against the Swiss was very encouraging and they were slightly unfortunate not to get a point from the game. If they can replicate that performance on Wednesday, they do have a chance of causing a shock.

Germany - Hungary: Form Analysis
The 5-1 victory over Scotland means that Germany are now unbeaten in five games, a run that stretches back to November 2023. Most encouragingly for Die Mannschaft, the performances in those games have been generally very good, and a big improvement on the limp displays that saw them crash out of the 2022 World Cup at the group stage. It has now been eight years since Germany won a knockout game at a major tournament, something that Julian Nagelsman's squad will be desperate to rectify this Summer.
Saturday's defeat to Switzerland was Hungary's first competitive loss since September 2022. They went through their entire qualifying campaign undefeated and have lost just twice in their last 17 games. After 30 years in the doldrums, this is Hungary's third consecutive appearance at the European Championships. They failed to make it out of the group stage in 2020, but reached the last 16 in 2016 before losing 0-4 to a very strong Belgium side.
Hungary are undefeated in their last three games versus Germany, including a 1-0 Nations League success when the sides last met in 2022. The overall head to head is extremely tight, with Germany holding a very narrow 13-12 advantage.

Germany & Hungary Squad Analysis
Both sides could name unchanged starting elevens for Wednesday's crucial game. Germany seem almost certain to stick with the team that found Scotland. That means no place for Niclas Fullkrug, despite his impressive, goal-scoring cameo on Friday. Kai Havertz will once again occupy the most advanced position, with Wirtz and Musiala joining Ilkay Gundogan in the attacking midfield roles. The rest of the side virtually picks itself, with veteran keeper Manuel Neur still preferred to Marc-André ter Stegen between the posts, despite the latter being in much better form.
Hungary will probably stick to their tried and tested 5-2-2-1 formation as they look to close down space for Germany's most creative players. It took about an hour for Hungary to find their rhythm on Saturday, but when they did, they looked extremely dangerous from wide areas. Barnabas Varga missed an absolute sitter, but made up for it with a powerful goal headed shortly after. If the likes of Dominik Szoboszlai and Roland Sallai can provide Varga with ammunition, then Hungary will pose a serious attacking threat to the Germans. Despite conceding three times, goalkeeper Péter Gulácsi also played very well in the Swiss game, another strong performance will be required to give Hungary any chance of victory in their second game.
