After the many first rounds of the Madrid Masters 1000, the seeded players enter the round of 32. One of these matches pits Frenchman Gael Monfils against Russian top seed Andrey Rublev.
Gael Monfils is taking part in this Madrid tournament for the 14th time in his career. At 38 years of age, there's no doubt that the Frenchman has a wealth of experience on clay courts and seems determined to remain at the highest level. Quarter-finalist here in 2010 against Rafael Nadal, the Frenchman has just won a tricky first round tie against qualifier Borna Gojo, having to come from behind to lose the first set 1-6. But true to form, Gael Monfils didn't give up and took the lead in the other sets.
Andrey Rublev is back here as defending champion. Winner of last year's Madrid tournament against Felix Auger-Aliassime, the Russian is under pressure to defend his name here. Winner of his first round match in Monte Carlo against none other than Gael Monfils (6-4, 7-6(7-2), he was then stopped by Arthur Fils, as he was in Barcelona, where he didn't get past the second round against Alejandro Davidovich Fokina.
