Florida Panthers vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction & Picks - NHL
by Dan Angell | in NHL Picks
The Florida Panthers (67-29-8 SU, 49-55 ATS) take their third attempt at trying to lock down the Stanley Cup as they travel back to Alberta to face the Edmonton Oilers (63-35-7 SU, 46-59 ATS). Edmonton has outscored Florida 13-4 in the past two games and completely turned the series on its head. Only two other teams have ever come back from a 0-3 deficit to get to a seventh game, and it hasn't happened since 1945.
Inexplicably, Florida didn't look ready to play in Game 5. Maybe the pressure of what they're trying to do has finally kicked in on the Panthers, because they did not respond until it was far too late in Game 5. Only Matthew Tkachuk seemed to recognize the situation and raise his game, and that's not enough when closing out a series.

Florida Panthers - Edmonton Oilers: Form Analysis
The over has now cashed in three straight games, as the series has completely changed. Edmonton seems to have discovered something in the third period Game 3, and the Oilers are likely to try to press that edge here.
Florida finally lost a game where it has scored at least three goals, and it lost back-to-back games for just the second time this postseason.

Florida Panthers & Edmonton Oilers Squad Analysis
The biggest concern for Florida right now is that the Panthers' special teams aren't getting the job done. Florida came into this series knowing that it could neither give away cheap penalties nor allow the Oilers to get rolling. The Panthers have avoided the cheap penalties, but they haven't managed to maintain their edge on special teams. Edmonton scored three special teams goals in Game 5 after finally breaking the ice with the man advantage in Game 5.
Florida's biggest issue there is that it has gotten away from its system. The Panthers won the first three games because they were sucking Edmonton in and forcing the Oilers to play on their terms. That has not happened in either of the past two games, and there's no more of the excuse that the Panthers simply punted on Game 4. Edmonton took control and took the Panthers' fans out of the game, so it's clear that there's something wrong here. If Florida doesn't get itself back to what worked, a reverse sweep is possible.
Florida Panthers - Edmonton Oilers Key Points
- Three of the Panthers’ past four defeats have cashed on the over.
- Only one game in this series has been decided by one goal.
- The Panthers are 3-4 when attempting to close out a series.
- The Oilers are 4-0 when facing elimination in this postseason.

Our Florida Panthers vs Edmonton Oilers Prediction
Florida remains a threat and a favorite, but only if it figures out how to play the way that it did in the first three games. The problem is that once the Oilers get rolling, it can be very difficult to stop their momentum. Connor McDavid in particular has proven to be incredibly difficult to handle once he broke out of his slump in Game 3.
Even if the Panthers do get back on track, the way the Oilers are playing and the desperate nature of this type of game means that this total is probably far too low. Edmonton hit it by itself in Game 4 and nearly did the same thing in Game 5. Unless Sergei Bobrovsky stands on his head, the Oil will likely light the lamp a few times. Our prediction for Florida vs. Edmonton is Over 5.5 Goals.
