The Euro 2024 quarter-finals continue this Saturday! Starting at noon Eastern, we'll see England against Switzerland. The match will be played at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Düsseldorf. Since the release of the odds on the winner, the Three Lions have been heralded as the big favorites of the European competition. However, bettors who placed an early future bet on England to win it all have had some tense moments.
Gareth Southgate's team has been very disappointing at Euro 2024. Far from brilliant in the group phase, they came very close to an exit in the Round of 16 against Slovakia, but Jude Bellingham saved the day with an amazing goal. In the quarter-finals, England face one of the dark horses of the tournament: Switzerland. We've been looking forward to seeing England in action at Euro 2024. In search of their first European title, the Three Lions are hoping to do just that at this edition. However, they will need to step up their game if they are to go all the way.
In their Group C opener, they squeezed out a victory against Serbia (1-0). Since then, things have been much more complicated for Gareth Southgate's team. They ended their group phase with two draws, against Denmark (1-1) and Slovenia (0-0). While the English team finished top of their group, they were far from perfect.
In fact, Harry Kane's teammates were close to being eliminated in their last match against an underpowered Slovakian side. The Slovaks opened the scoring in the 25th minute. It looked as if England would not be able to reverse the trend. And yet... In the 95th minute, Jude Bellingham fired England's first shot on target with a superb acrobatic bicycle kick. Harry Kane was then able to give the Three Lions victory in extra time with his team's second shot on target (2-1). It won't be the same story in the quarter-finals, however...
England's performance at Euro 2024 has been very disappointing.
Switzerland, for their part, are one of the big surprises of this Euro 2024. The Nati got the job done in Group A. They had no trouble beating Hungary (1-3), before holding off Scotland (1-1) and above all drawing against Germany (1-1).
Against host nation Germany, Murat Yakin's men led until the 92nd minute. However, they were pegged back and had to settle for 2nd place in their group. They then made quick work of a defensive Italian side.
Granit Xhaka's teammates were ultra-solid in their opening knockout matches. They played an attacking brand of soccer, taking 16 shots on Gianluigi Donnarumma's goal. After a controlled match, Switzerland booked their place in the quarter-finals (2-0). And they're not far off the mark now...

For this Euro 2024 quarter-final, England won't be able to count on Marc Guéhi. The Crystal Palace central defender has been cautioned in the last 2 matches, and therefore remains suspended against Switzerland. They'll be counting on a top performance from the Three Lions' senior players. They are nowhere near the level expected. Phil Foden and Bukayo Saka, for example, are struggling to reproduce their club form. It's only Jude Bellingham who manages to pull out all the stops. Although he wasn't much in the game, apart from the first half against Serbia, the Real Madrid midfielder knows when his team needs him.
After scoring against the Serbians, the Madrid star was able to repeat the feat against Slovakia in the Round of 16. And what a way to do it! In the dying seconds, he produced a superb acrobatic bicycle kick to take his side into extra time. He'll have to be at it again against Switzerland! Harry Kane scored his 2nd Euro goal in the previous round. One of the world's most prolific strikers has no intention of slowing down.
Jude Bellingham, failing to show up in the game, is decisive for his country, unlike his team-mates.
Murat Yakin will have his full squad for this Euro 2024 showdown. Silvan Widmer, who was suspended in the previous round, is back for the quarter-finals. Switzerland can count on a team full of quality and confidence. They are also fortunate to have one of the best goalkeepers in the world in Yann Sommer. The Swiss keeper is coming off a fine season with Inter Milan. And what about Granit Xhaka? The Bayer Leverkusen midfielder won the Bundesliga. The Nati captain is just as important for the national team. There are other players to keep an eye on. Ruben Vargas was one of the main architects of qualification against Italy, with 1 goal and 1 assist. Remo Freuler, who also scored in the Round of 8, has 2 assists to his name in this Euro.
