Group C winners England take on Slovakia in the last 16 of Euro 2024. Despite topping their group, England were largely disappointing in their three games, creating very few clear cut chances and looking devoid of confidence. They will need to drastically improve to justify their tag of pre-tournament favorites. As for Slovakia, they progressed to the knockouts as one of the best third placed teams, after picking up four points in Group E. England - Slovakia: Form Analysis
England's results have been a mixed bag in 2024. They have only won two of their seven games this year, and suffered a shock 0-1 defeat to lowly Iceland in their final warm up picture. However, they have been solid defensively in recent games, conceding just twice in their last four games. The Three Lions have never won the European Championships, although they came agonizingly close at Euro 2020, losing to Italy on penalties in the final.
Slovakia have also struggled for consistency this year, winning three and losing two of their five matches. Like England, their main strength lies in defence and they conceded only three goals in their last five matches. This is Slovakia's thrid successive appearance at the European Championships. They reached the last 16 in 2016, but failed to make it out of the group stage at Euro 2020.
Slovakia have never beaten England, with the Three Lions winning five of the six games between the sides. The only draw occurred at Euro 2016, when the teams played out a 0-0 draw in the group stage. Their last meeting was in 2017, and saw England come from behind to win 2-1 in a World Cup qualification game.

Phil Foden left the England squad on Wednesday to be at the birth of his third child. It remains to be seen whether we will be back in Germany before Sunday's game. If Foden is unavailable, Chelsea's Cole Palmer seems likely to come in following his bright cameo against Slovenia, although Newcastle's Anthony Gordon is also in the reckoning. Aside from that, Gareth Southgate may decide to replace the ineffective Connor Gallagher with Kobbie Mainoo in midfield.

After picking the same starting line up for their first two games, Slovakia made one change for the 1-1 draw with Romania in their final group game. Striker David Strelec replaced Robert Bozenik in the eleven, and despite not finding the scoresheet, he did enough to retain his place. The rest of the Slovakian team essentially picks itself, with Stanislav Lobotka and Ondrej Duda their main threats in midfield.
