Diana Shnaider of Russia will try to move into the quarterfinal round as she plays Elise Mertens of Belgium in the second round of the 2025 Stuttgart Open.
Ranked No.13 in the world, Shnaider made it to the second round after weathering off a serious upset bid from Veronika Kudermetova of Russia 5-7 6-2 6-3 in the first round. Shnaider has been plagued with inconsistency this season, but she gets a chance to secure a quarterfinal stint on Wednesday if she beats Mertens.
Mertens cruised to a 7-6(3) 6-2 win over Aliaksandra Sasnovich of Belgium in the first round. The Belgian collected 23 points off the first serves and 18 points off the second to seal her entry into her third quarterfinal of the year and first since winning the Singapore Open early February.
