Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers Prediction & Picks - NHL
by Dan Angell | in NHL Picks
The Edmonton Oilers (64-35-7 SU, 47-59 ATS) return to Fort Lauderdale to face the Florida Panthers (67-30-8 SU, 49-56 ATS) in Game 7 of the Stanley Cup Finals. This is just the third time in NHL history a team has lost the first three games and lived to see the seventh game. The other two saw a split between the two instances, with Toronto completing the comeback in 1942 and Detroit falling short in 1945. Before Game 4 began, the odds that the Oilers could come back to make history were incredibly long.
But Edmonton has returned to the things that got it here, while Florida has failed to do the things it did so well in the regular season. The Panthers’ defense has been poor in the past three games, allowing the Oilers to put up 18 goals. Florida still has a chance to avoid the collapse, but only if they return to their system and stick to it.

Edmonton Oilers - Florida Panthers: Form Analysis
The Panthers’ biggest issue has been that its stars have not shown up in the past few games. Florida’s biggest edge was supposed to be its depth, and it was exactly that through the first three games. But when the series turned in Game 4, the Panthers’ depth didn’t respond. Instead, Florida has undergone an almost total disappearing act from its best players.

Edmonton Oilers & Florida Panthers Squad Analysis
Carter Verhaeghe has just two points in this series, after scoring 17 against Eastern Conference opponents. Aleksander Barkov has one point in Games 4 through 6 after getting four points in the first three games. And Matthew Tkachuk couldn’t follow up his goal in Game 5 with any point in Game 6.
Meanwhile, Edmonton has played defense. The Oilers had an idea that they would win the special teams battle once the power play got rolling, but their penalty kill has been even more impressive. For the series, Florida is 1-for-19 on the power play, and the Oilers actually have more goals on Florida’s power play than the Panthers do. The Panthers were able to minimize the damage in Game 6, although the Oilers still scored first. That’s been an issue in this series; the Panthers have only scored first twice in six games.
Edmonton Oilers - Florida Panthers Key Points

Our Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers Prediction
The trends from the past all suggest this will be a low-scoring game. Out of 17 Stanley Cup finals that went to a seventh game, the final game of the series saw five goals or fewer on 16 occasions. This is where everyone starts to tighten up a little, as now both teams will be one win away from lifting the Stanley Cup. Historically, that means fewer chances and less-open hockey.
But that’s not the way that Edmonton got back into the series. The Oilers have to stick with what they’ve done well, and that means playing an open style that generates as many chances as possible. If that doesn’t work out, it was at least the way the Oilers feel comfortable playing. Based off what the teams have recently shown, our prediction for Edmonton vs. Florida is Over 5.5 Goals.
Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers - Other Interesting Picks
Carter Verhaeghe Anytime Goal Scorer
Carter Verhaeghe is too good to keep him off the scoresheet for much longer. He’s been quiet since scoring in Game 1, but the Panthers still depend on him greatly to get the offense going. At +195, the odds aren’t great, but you could do a lot worst than backing a guy who hasn’t scored since the opening game to find his scoring touch here.
