Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers Prediction & Picks - NHL
by Dan Angell | in NHL Picks
The Edmonton Oilers (62-35-7 SU, 45-59 ATS) look to stay alive in the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers (67-28-8 SU, 49-54 ATS). The Panthers gave by far their worst showing of the postseason last time out in an 8-1 loss at Edmonton, but the Oilers were clearly the more desperate team from the opening minute. And that exposed a clear cheat code in the Panthers' defense: Florida can't suck a team in that plays from ahead.
Far too often in this series, Edmonton has had to play from behind and play on Florida's terms. When the Panthers don't dictate the tempo, they're much easier to handle. In Game 4, the Panthers never got comfortable and couldn't force the Oilers to play their game. Doing that at home is one thing; doing it on the road is another. Now the Panthers get the second line change, and they'll be much more motivated to win the Cup in front of their home fans.

Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl both showed up in Game 4, as virtually everything clicked for the Oilers. However, the power play still didn't get a lot done. Edmonton did finally score with the man advantage, but the Oilers were just 1-for-6 with the man advantage in Game 4. That's not anywhere near where it needs to be for them to get back in the series.

Edmonton Oilers - Florida Panthers: Form Analysis
One overlooked reason for the Oilers' struggles is that McDavid has been getting beat consistently on the faceoff. He's won 14 out of 44 faceoffs in this series, which means Florida usually starts play dictating the tempo while he's on the ice. And that tends to open things up for the Panthers' offense to either force Edmonton into desperation or open the blue line up for an attack. The Oilers got away with it in Game 4 because they got to Sergei Bobrovsky early, but if that doesn't happen, the Oil haven't had a good Plan B.

Edmonton Oilers & Florida Panthers Squad Analysis
Bobrovsky usually doesn't have two bad games in a row. He's given up more than three goals three times this postseason, and in the next game, the Panthers are 3-0 and Bobrovsky has allowed a total of just four goals.

Our Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers Prediction
One key thing that players and coaches routinely talk about is making it OK for the other team to lose. Essentially, that means letting the opponent rationalize defeat and back off their efforts. Florida knew that it was getting on a plane to Fort Lauderdale after Game 4, win or lose. The only question was whether Edmonton was coming with them. Given that the Panthers had a long flight home no matter what, it's likely that once the Oilers asserted themselves, the Panthers packed it in and mentally focused on winning Game 5 on home ice.
Florida's not going to fold so easily this time around. This time, the Panthers have zero incentive not to go hard. They have no desire to let the Oil back into the series, nor do they want to head back to Alberta. With a hyped crowd looking for the team's first Stanley Cup, Edmonton doesn't appear to have made up enough of the gap to turn things around. Our prediction for Edmonton vs. Florida is for the Panthers to win.
Edmonton Oilers vs Florida Panthers - Other Interesting Picks
Panthers Team Total Over 3
Florida has gotten to its magic number of three goals 14 times this postseason, and the Panthers are 13-1 when they hit it. Plus, Edmonton is likely to take chances if it falls behind, as there is no tomorrow for the Oilers if they lose. That can open things up for the Panthers to zoom past this total.
