The Edmonton Oilers (61-32-7 SU, 44-56 ATS) look to gain the edge in the opening game of the Stanley Cup Finals against the Florida Panthers (64-27-8 SU, 46-53 ATS). This game sets up a matchup between two contrasting styles, as the Panthers lead the NHL in fewest goals allowed and the Oilers sit near the top in goals scored.
Edmonton, however, has managed to turn things around defensively over its past two series. The Oilers haven’t allowed a power play goal since the Vancouver series, killing off 28 consecutive penalties. Given that Florida’s style is built on tough defense and taking the occasional penalty, Edmonton could have a big advantage with special teams if that continues, as the Panthers risk giving up far too many opportunities.

Florida’s style of play sucks in its opponents and forces them to bring the game to them. That was the way the Panthers beat the Rangers, as New York couldn’t handle Florida’s defensive style over a lengthy series. Sergei Bobrovsky has played lights-out throughout the postseason, and it usually takes opponents a game or two to figure out Florida.
Edmonton’s defensive improvement suggests that the Oilers will likely try to work with playing the Panthers’ game, at least for the first game or two. That likely leads to a defensive style of play that favors Florida, and it drastically favors the under. It’s rare to see an under this low when the Oilers are involved, but it’s there for a reason.
