The Duke Blue Devils meet the Houston Cougars in a battle that will send one of them to the Elite 8. Duke has had a relatively easy road to the Sweet 16. They defeated the 13 seeded Vermont Catamounts 64-47 and then were fortunate to face the 12 seeded James Madison Dukes who pulled off the upset over Wisconsin. Duke throttled them 93-55. Oddly enough, big man Kyle Filipowski, has been extremely quiet in the tournament. He had been averaging 16.7ppg and 8rpg but has put up just 3 points in the opening game and 14 in round 2. If Duke wants to stay in this one with a strong defensive Houston team, Filipowski will need to impose his will on the inside. For Houston, after defeating 16 seeded Longwood 86-46, they faced a real challenge in Texas A&M. The Aggies put up the most points (95) on the Cougars this season but fell short of their upset bid by 5 points. Emanuel Sharp was sensational for the Cougars in their last game and finished with 30 points on 7-14 shooting from beyond the arc. Jamal Shead and LJ Cryer combined to add another 41 points as the Cougars put up their highest scoring game of the season.

Houston and Duke are extremely evenly matched on both the offensive and defensive ends. The path to victory for the Blue Devils is going to be on the offensive glass. Houston ranks 273rd in the country in opponents’ offensive rebounding percentage while Duke is 78th in getting to the offensive glass. If Duke can gain bonus possession this way and Filipowski finally gets going, they will certainly be able to pull off the upset. That said, we will happily take the points here and look for Duke to at least cover if not win outright.
