The Drake Bulldogs (28-6 SU, 18-15 ATS) attempt to make up for falling short last year when they open the NCAA tournament against the Washington State Cougars (24-9 SU, 17-16 ATS). Washington State has been one of the surprises of the season, earning its first NCAA appearance in 16 years. The Cougars might be struggling a bit with expectations, as they ended the year with two defeats in their final three games.
Drake boasts one of the best scorers in the field in Tucker DeVries. In the Missouri Valley final against Indiana State, DeVries willed his team into the NCAA tournament by scoring 27 points and hitting four of his five 3-point attempts. However, this was atypical for him, as he's usually not a great 3-point shooter. He does most of his best work inside the arc, yet he sometimes takes too many shots from deep. If Washington State can make him shoot from deep, Drake's strength can become its weakness.

DeVries and Drake faced this spot a year ago. Miami provided the blueprint on how to beat the Bulldogs by keeping DeVries from getting his shots until he was well outside the arc. DeVries shot 1-for-13 for the game and 1-for-11 from 3-point range, allowing the Hurricanes to escape with a seven-point win. Washington State ranks third in the Pac-12 in rebounding and second in opposing 3-point defense. It has the playing style and personnel needed to win this game.
If DeVries starts missing, Isaac Jones and Andrej Jakimovski can make sure that's the only look he gets. The Cougars boast a strong post presence at both ends of the floor, which is something Drake cannot match. The Bulldogs' biggest weaknesses are their inability to deny low-post scoring and their inability to extend their own possessions. Washington State can and will exploit both of those things. Because of that, our prediction for Drake vs. Washington State is Washington State +1.5
