The victory over the world’s No.2 capped an impressive week of tennis for Shnaider, who also posted test-of-characters wins over 6-3 3-6 7-6(2) of Great Britain and Magdalena French of Poland 2-6 6-3 7-6(5). Samsonova received a bye for being the No.6 seed in the tournament. The Russian lived up to her billing, though, as she obliterated Moyuka Uchijima 6-4 6-2 and Elise Mertens 6-2 6-4. Samsonova entered this year’s Canadian Open to settle some unfinished business after losing to Jessica Pegula in last year’s finals.
