No.3 seed Daniil Medvedev of Russia will take on Zhizhen Zhang of China in the men’s singles round-of-16 match at Terra Wortmann Open 2024 in Halle, Germany. Medvedev, who reached the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Open 2023, kicked off his grass-court campaign with a 7-6(4) 6-4 win over Nuno Borges of Portugal 7-6(4) 6-4. The former US Open champion won 76 percent of the first serves and 57 percent of the second serves to fend off an upset attempt from Borges. Meanwhile, in the first round, Zhang survived Sabastian Ofner of Austria in a grueling three-set match, 7-6(8) 6-7(3) 6-4. Zhan and Ofner traded powerful serves, combining for 43 aces. Zhan got the edge over his foe by converting 68 percent of his first serves into points and winning 79 percent of the first serves. This will be the first time since 2016 that Zhang and Medvedev will play each other. The last time the two played, Medvedev gutted out a three-set win 3-6 6-2 7-6(4) in the quarterfinal of the Nice Open 2016.

Prediction: Medvedev is the overwhelming favorite at -900. However, given the Chinese' caliber, I wouldn’t be too confident about the Russians cruising to a lopsided win. Like Medvedev, Zhang has spent most of the year on the ATP Tour circuit, winning 48.15% of matches. Zhang’s powerful service game could also present some problems for Medvedev in this game. Ultimately, I still think Medvedev will secure his spot in the quarterfinal round by pulling off a hard-earned win against the Chinese.
