Number 1 seed and tournament favorite Coco Gauff begins her Toronto Masters 1000 against China's Yafan Wang.

World number 2, Coco has won just one tournament this season, in Auckland last January. Since then, the winner of the last US Open hasn't won a single tournament, an anomaly for one of the best players on the WTA Tour. Eliminated in the round of 16 at Wimbledon 3 weeks ago, the American was upset in the 3rd round at the 2024 Olympic Games by Donna Vekic. A big disappointment for Coco Gauff, who was aiming for a medal in the tournament. Now it's time for the last part of the season, with a first tournament in Toronto and a debut against Yafan Wang.

The Chinese player came through the qualifying rounds to reach the final table. Ranked 72nd in the world, Yafan Wang took advantage of the pace she set to beat Sofia Kenin in her first round, a fine performance for the Asian tenniswoman. Since March, it has become difficult for the Chinese player to win matches, as prior to this tournament she had lost 10 of her last 14 matches. But the momentum seems to be building for Yafan Wang, who nonetheless expects to suffer against the tournament favorite.
