The Colorado Rockies (41-71 SU, 57-55 ATS) conclude their series with the San Diego Padres (60-52 SU, 58-54 ATS) after splitting the first two of this set. For whatever reason, the Padres have really had their issues with Colorado, losing six of nine to the Rockies on the year. Most teams salivate when the Rockies come to town, but San Diego just hasn’t figured out Colorado’s hitters.
The Rockies’ lineup has been the deciding factor in this series, because the result has been entirely predicated on whether or not the Padres keep the Rockies in check. In San Diego’s past four wins in this series, the Rockies scored two runs or fewer. When the Rockies won the game, they haven’t scored fewer than five runs. The Padres’ run total has been more consistent; eight of the past 10 meetings have seen between two and five runs cross the plate for San Diego.

The Padres really need to find the spring version of Matt Waldron, because the summer version has not been up to par. Waldron hasn’t been abysmal, but he hasn’t been very effective in the summer months. In his past six starts, he’s allowed three runs or more in five of them. His team has gone 2-4 in that stretch, helped by some offensive firepower.
Cal Quantrill also hasn’t pitched well lately, and he’s been involved in some epic scorelines. Only one of his past eight games has seen the teams combine for a single digit run total. His past two starts turned into football scores, as the Broncos beat the Patriots — sorry, the Rockies beat the Red Sox — 20-7 and Colorado fell 10-7 at the Angels. With both pitchers struggling, our prediction for Colorado vs. San Diego is Over 8.5 Runs.
