The Cubs failed to beat the Dodgers again, this time in Game 1 of the weekend series in Los Angeles. The Cubs were coming off a six-game stretch at Wrigley Field where they had hit fairly well, and before that, in early April, they had scored 35 runs in three games against the Athletics in Sacramento. Therefore, interest arose as to whether they could continue their blistering pace when Yamamoto pitched against them, and it was the Japanese player who ultimately won the battle, cheered by Dodger fans.
Busch, Swanson, and Hoerner managed to get many pitches off the Japanese ace, but often, in 3-2 situations, they would be fooled by swinging at his spectacular split finger or letting Strike call a fastball without swinging. Yamamoto's good command and pitch selection proved to be too much for the Cubs, who saw a Dodgers home run off Edman's bat with two on base prove enough for the Dodgers to win the game 3-0 again, thanks to a strong performance from the bullpen.
