Celtic vs SK Slovan Bratislava Prediction & Picks - Champions League
by Tyler Doty | in Champions League Picks
Celtic Glasgow, leaders of the Scottish league with 15 points from 15 games, take on Slovakian club Slovan Bratislava, also leaders of the Nike Liga with 15 points from 18, at Celtic Park this Wednesday, September 18th at 3:00PM EST on the first day of the Champions League. These two teams have never crossed swords before, so this will be a first for them in Scotland. Celtic Glasgow are no strangers to tournament play, having often finished as Scottish champions (54 domestic titles), and will be hoping to reach the Round of 16 by finishing between 9th and 24th in the new Champions League format. Slovan Bratislava, who have failed to progress from the group stage of the Champions League since 2009, have managed to reach the final stages of the competition after knocking out FC Struga, NK Celje, APOEL and Midtjylland. With little experience at this level, the Slovak club could be in for their first disappointment on Scottish soil.Limited Offer. Currently at FanDuel

Celtic - SK Slovan Bratislava: Form Analysis
Celtic Glasgow are no strangers to the Champions League, and generally do well. The Scottish club has played in the last 3 editions, and last season was in a tough group with Atlético Madrid, Lazio Rome and Feyenoord. Celtic were eliminated at the group stage, having taken 4 points at home to Atlético Madrid (2-2) and Feyenoord (2-1). The “Greens” have made a remarkable start to the season, with 4 wins in as many games played in the Scottish league. Kasper Schmeichel's team are even on an incredible run of 10 wins in a row in all competitions, most recently at St.Mirren (0-3), Rangers (3-0) and Hearts (2-0) this weekend.
Slovan Bratislava are the tournament's minnows, having just reached the Champions League finals for the first time after a long qualifying campaign. The leader of the Nike Liga knocked out 4 clubs: FC Struga (4-2 and 1-2), NK Celje (1-1 and 5-0), APOEL (2-0 and 0-0) and Midtjylland (1-1 and 3-2). Leading the Slovakian league with 15 points from a possible 18, Slovan Bratislava have just 1 home defeat to Zilina (0-5) on September 1. Since that defeat, Weiss's players have beaten AC Nitra (0-5) on the road in the 1/64th final of the Slovakian Cup, before going on to win at Dun.Streda (1-2).

Celtic & SK Slovan Bratislava Squad Analysis
Celtic Glasgow have an empty infirmary, but two uncertainties remain concerning the presence on the team sheet of Johnston (leg) and Nawrocki (calf). Slovan Bratislava will be without defender Pauschek (shoulder) and Swiss striker Adler Da Silva (shin).
Celtic, despite the departure of their best player Matt O'Riley to Brighton this summer, have recruited A.Engels (Augsburg), A.Idah (Norwich) and A.Trusty (Sheffield United) in particular. Against Slovan Bratislava, the Scottish club will be counting on their captain Callum McGregor, the club's top scorer in the league with 3 goals in 5 matches, as well as their German striker Kuhn, scorer of 2 goals and 2 assists in the Scottish championship.
Slovan Bratislava don't have a squad that would make the other clubs in this Champions League envious, but they can count on the experience of midfielders Vladimir Weiss (34) and Juraj Kucka (37), who spent most of his career in Italy with Genoa, AC Milan and Parma. Armenian international Tigran Barseghyan is the key player in this Slovakian team, having scored 6 goals and provided 1 assist in 6 matches. His brace gave the leaders victory over Dun.Streda (1-2) on Saturday.

Celtic Glasgow should succeed in imposing their game and their attacking soccer in the warm atmosphere of Celtic Park, where 60,000 fans will be urging their club on. The Scottish league leaders, who are the favorites in this duel, should take the full measure of their opponents, who have had a qualifying campaign without too much opposition to reach the final stages of this Champions League. The Slovakian team will be looking to limit the damage and make a good impression, despite the difference in level which should be felt on the pitch.
