In New York City, the final Grand Slam of the season opens this week. In the first round, top-3 Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz and Australian Li Tu will battle it out for a place in the second round. Carlos Alcaraz, who was eliminated in the first round of the Cincinnati tournament last week by Frenchman Gaël Monfils, should be keen to get back on track and win again in this tournament. The author of an exceptional run in the other 3 Grand Slams this season, having been quarter-finalist at the Australian Open and then winner at Roland Garros and Wimbledon, he should quickly win this first round against a much less experienced opponent.
For his part, Li Tu entered this Grand Slam through the qualifying rounds. He won his first 2 matches in 2 sets, then had a little more difficulty concluding his 3rd victory against Jesper De Jong, ranked 130th in the world, in a 3-set match. More accustomed to taking part in Challengers, the Australian was a finalist at Lexington against Joao Fonseca (163rd in the world) and then a quarter-finalist at Lincoln against Chak Lam Coleman Wong (153rd in the world). Fine results, however, far removed from the levels currently played in the Grand Slams.
