Boxing +92kg: Our prediction for the super heavyweight category at the 2024 Olympic Games

Paris Olympics - Super Heavyweight Boxing Prediciton

Defending Olympic champion Bakhodir Jalolov will return to defend his crown at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Since his triumph at Tokyo 2020, the Uzbekistan fighter has gone on to win gold at the 2022 Asian Asian Games and 2023 World Championships.

Jalolov earned the gold medal after beating Richard Torrez by unanimous decision in the finals of the super heavyweight tournament at the last games. Torrez will not be participating in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Great Britain will place their hopes on Delicious Orie, the super-heavyweight (92kg+) champion crowned at the 2023 European Games in Poland.

Competing for Team GB, Orie triumphed over Azerbaijan’s Mahammed Abdullayev by unanimous decision to secure the gold medal at the European Games, continuing Great Britain’s impressive streak in the super-heavyweight division, where the nation has medaled in each of the last four Olympic Games.

Joshua Edwards hails from the historic boxing city of Houston and has qualified for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games through his performance at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games.

Edwards boasts an impressive resume, including a third-place finish at the 2023 Czech Republic Grand Prix and the 2022 AMBC Elite Championships, as well as a gold medal at the 2021 USA Boxing Elite National Championships.

Despite this great competition, for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Bakhodir Jalolov is our - and the bookmakers' - favorite for the gold medal. Our prediction for men's super heavyweight boxing at the Olympic Games +92kg: Bakhodir Jalolov wins gold!

Women's Boxing +75kg: our prediction on the women's Middleweight category at the Paris 2024 Olympics

Paris Olympics - Women's Boxing 75kg

With the 69kg weight class being scrapped for the 2024 Paris Olympics, India’s Lovlina Borgohain, who won bronze in the women’s 69kg category at the Tokyo Olympics, has had to move up in class and will now compete in the +75kg section.

Borgohain also won the 2023 World Championship gold and 2022 Asian Games silver at 69kg. It will be interesting to see how she fares with the step-up.

Tokyo 2020 silver medalist Li Qian, now 33 years of age, will be featuring in her third consecutive Olympics.

The Chinese athlete has won almost every accolade available, including golds at the World Championships, Asian Championships, and Asian Games in 2022. However, the one medal that she has yet to add to her collection is the Olympic gold, having earned bronze and silver in the past.

Davina Michel is the hometown hero and will be the first 75kg woman to box for France at the Olympic Games. Michel is a multiple French Championship gold medalist and also won bronze at the 2022 World Championships and silver in last year’s European Games.

Our early Olympics women’s +75kg boxing prediction: Li Qian to finish top three.

2024 Olympics Boxing prediction: Odds to win the Women's +75kg Gold Medal

  • Tammara Thibeault (CAN) +110

Our other predictions for boxing at the 2024 Olympics

Paris Olympic - Other Boxing Predictions

Aside from the heaviest weight classes, there is plenty to look forward to in the lighter divisions.

Other Women's Boxing Classes

Starting with the women: in the 50kg section, Turkey holds a strong hand in earning gold through Buse Naz Cakıroglu, who took the silver in 2020 and will likely be the favorite this year in Stoyka Krasteva’s absence.

Stanimira Petrova has five gold medals to her name and will be looking to add an Olympic medal to her collection. The Bulgarian is likely to be close to the top of betting boards in the 54kg class.

In the 57kg weight class, Nesthy Petecio of the Philippines will be looking to upgrade her silver from 2020, while Svetlana Staneva has been in great shape recently and qualified by winning gold at this year’s European Championships.

The 60kg section will see Glasgow’s pride and 2020 Olympic champion Kellie Harrington look to defend the gold. Harrington also took the top prizes at the European Championships in 2022 and the European Games in 2023 and is likely the one to beat at this weight class.

Commonwealth Games champion Rosie Eccles will carry Great Britain’s hopes in the 66kg weight class and will be going for gold in her first Olympics, while Belgium’s Oshin Derieuw holds a professional record of 19 wins and 0 losses ahead of the competition and could be a dark horse in the section.

Other Men's Boxing Classes

In the men's competition, Billal Bennama will be the hometown favorite in the 51kg section after earning gold at the European Games last year and at the European Championships in 2022.

However, there are major expectations for Turkish youngster Samet Gumus, who took the gold medal in the European Championships this year and silver in the European Games in 2023. The 23-year-old could be a sleeper in this section, so keep a keen eye on him.

At 57kg, Uzbekistan has another solid chance of securing the medal through 24-year-old Abdumalik Khalokov. He was the 2021 AIBA World Boxing Champion and already has three senior gold medals under his belt, including the World Championship in 2023, as well as the Asian Games and Asian Championship in 2022.

Canada is represented in the 63.5kg section by Wyatt Sanford, who is the reigning Pan American Games champion and won bronze at the 2022 Commonwealth Games at this weight. Both fighters are being tipped to land in the medals.

In the 71kg bracket, we quite like the chances of Kazakhstan’s Aslanbek Shymbergenov and Mexican Marco Verde. Shymbergenov won the gold medal in the light middleweight event at the 2023 IBA World Boxing Championships, while Verde was the 2023 Pan American Games gold medalist.

For the 80kg weight class, our pick to end in the top three is undoubtedly Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak.

Looking at the 80kg weight class, our pick to end in the top three is undoubtedly Ukrainian Oleksandr Khyzhniak, who will feel he has unfinished business at the Games. The 28-year-old took the silver in Tokyo 2020, and Olympic gold is about the only medal he does not currently boast, having already won the European Championships, European Games, and the World Championships.

On to the big boys: The 92kg bracket is arguably the most difficult to call, with several promising youngsters set to make their Olympic debut.

Italy’s Aziz Abbes Mouhiidine is one such name, and at 25 years of age, he has already won the European Championships and European Games while earning silver in consecutive World Championships, all at heavyweight.

However, the favorite in the section is likely to be Cuba’s Julio Cesar La Cruz, who won the gold medals at the 2016 Rio de Janeiro and 2020 Tokyo Olympics. In more recent times, the 34-year-old also took the top step of the podium at the Central American and Caribbean Games and the Pan American Games, both in the last year.

Paris Olympic Boxing - Analyze the Fighters' stats

Evaluate Current Form

Examine how boxers have fared in the latest tournaments that they competed in, especially World Championships, continental competitions, and other major events leading up to the Olympics.

Additionally, check for any recent injuries or recoveries, as these can significantly impact a boxer’s performance, especially in the latter stages of the tournament.

Study Fighting Style and Adaptability

Analyze each fighter’s technical abilities, including their defense, footwork, and punching power. Once you have an indication of a fighter's major strengths in a fight then consider how adaptable they are to different opponents' styles.

Those who can adjust their strategies mid-fight often have an advantage, which you may be able to identify for the bookies.

Consider Coaching and Training

Paris Olympic Boxing - Coaching is key

Look into the coaching teams behind the boxers, especially the younger participants who are trying to make their name in the industry.

To do so, investigate the training camps and preparation routines of the fighters. As is the case in any sport, top-tier training facilities and rigorous training programs often lead to better performances.

Account for Psychological Factors

Boxing is as much about physical toughness as it is mental. Gauge a boxer’s mental resilience and their ability to handle pressure, especially in high-stakes scenarios like the Olympics and World Championships.

This is often where experienced boxers have an edge over rising stars, as their mental preparation is often better despite their age disadvantage. Also, consider any personal milestones or motivations that might drive a boxer to perform exceptionally well.

Factor in External Influences

Home advantage and crowd support can be crucial factors that influence a boxer's performance in a competition like the Olympic Games.

France has a total of seven fighters currently qualified for the 2024 Paris Olympics and it would come as no surprise to see one (or more) of them reach the finals.

By integrating these key aspects into your betting analysis, you can improve your predictions and gain an edge over the sportsbooks in the boxing event at the 2024 Paris Olympics.
