The Boston Red Sox are in South Beach for Independence Day week as they take on the Miami Marlins. A week of games at Fenway Park proved less fruitful than they may have hoped, winning just twice. Three of their four losses were not even close either, as the Sox gave up 9 runs in each of their blowout defeats. What they have accomplished to date has been worthy of significant praise, however. Very few pundits believed this Boston team would have a winning record, let alone make the playoffs. Yet it seems like they are headed in that direction. At 44-39 and with a favorable Miami series in store, they are just 1.5 games out of the final wild card spot in the American League. Considering they are in a difficult division, it makes their first half even more impressive. Skip Schumaker’s Marlins, meanwhile, have just 30 wins on the year and are a whopping 13.5 games away from a wild card spot, effectively rendering their playoff chances impossible.
