Benfica Lisbon vs Monaco Prediction & Picks - Champions League
by Simon Day | in Champions League Picks
For the second leg of the Champions League play-offs, SL Benfica and AS Monaco meet this Tuesday at 3 pm EST. The match will take place at Estádio da Luz. SL Benfica have already taken a major step towards qualifying for the last 16. The Portuguese club won the first leg away from home (0-1). They remain particularly solid in front of their home fans, and will be looking to make the most of their status to book their place in the next round.
AS Monaco, however, will be doing everything in their power to reverse the trend. Last weekend, the principality's Ligue 1 outfit bolstered their confidence with an emphatic 7-1 win over FC Nantes. A few days later, the Monegasque team will be hoping to follow this up in Europe's premier club competition. It promises to be a spectacular encounter! And that's exactly what we're predicting.

Benfica Lisbon - Monaco: Form Analysis
SL Benfica are back in the race for the Portuguese Liga title. They have won their last 3 matches and remain in 2nd place. They are just 2 points behind leaders Sporting CP. Following their Portuguese League Cup triumph, the Lisbon club have qualified for the quarter-finals of the Portuguese Cup. Bruno Lage's team are also in the Champions League play-offs. They got off to a good start in the first leg, winning 0-1 at AS Monaco last week.
SL Benfica, meanwhile, have taken a significant step towards qualification, following their 0-1 away win in the first leg.
AS Monaco, for their part, are in the top 4 of Ligue 1. The principality's club have just returned to winning ways in the league. Last weekend's 7-1 victory over FC Nantes was a resounding success. This should give them plenty of confidence going into the second leg of their Champions League playoff. Moncao has not yet given up hope. In the first leg against SL Benfica, Adi Hütter's men were forced to play almost 40 minutes shorthanded.

Our Benfica Lisbon vs Monaco Prediction
These are two teams moving in different directions at present. Benfica are absolutely flying and have produced some stunning displays (in Europe and domestically) over the last two months. On the other hand, Monaco have struggled for consistency in recent weeks and looked bereft of confidence in the first leg. On paper, these are two evenly matched sides, but we are backing the form horse to progress, so think Benfica will get the job done in a high scoring game. Our prediction for Benfica vs Monaco is: Benfica to win and over 2.5 goals.
