Ben Shelton is set to open his Mallorca Championships campaign against Rinky Hijikata of Australia on Wednesday. Shelton, the top seed in this ATP 250 event, will be gunning for his third career ATP title and first on grass court in this tourney. The prodigious American has just come from a disappointing stint at Cinch, where he got booted out right away in the first round by Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard 6-3 7-6(3) in round 1. Meanwhile, Hijikata will enter his crucial clash with Shelton already warmed up after surviving a three-set battle with Luka Nardi of Italy 6-2 2-6 7-5. The Aussie completed 64 per cent of his first serves and won 36 of 49 points in the first serves to gut out a close win over the Italian. The 23-year-old Hijakata hopes he can finally win his first career ATP title in Mallorca.

Shelton had a breakout year in 2023, making it to the quarterfinals of the Australian Open and the semifinal of the US Open that year. However, his 2024 run has been marred by inconsistency and shortcomings. The American only reached the third round of the first two Grand Slam tournaments (Australian and French Open) and only won just one title this year at U.S. Men's Clay Court Championships. Shelton is an excellent hard-court player with an 83 per cent win rate on the surface. On the other hand, his poor grasscourt record of 29 percent win rate makes me worry about his chances against Hijikata, who also doesn’t have an impressive grasscourt record and yet he has won four of his last five matches on the surface. Make no mistake, Shelton has a bright future ahead of him, but in this match, I feel that Hijikata might have a little edge because he has played more games on grass this season than his top-seeded foe.
