In this round of 16 of the Auckland 250, 22-year-old American Ben Shelton kicks off his season against 19-year-old Czech Jakub Mensik. Ben Shelton, seeded number 1, hasn't played since October. A finalist at the Swiss tournament in Basel against Frenchman Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard, he followed this up with some fine victories over top 20 players Andrey Rublev and Arthur Fils. Semi-finalist at last year's tournament in Auckland, he will be hoping to go one better this time around and make his mark in his first tournament of the year.
Jakub Mensik won his first-round match against Lucky Loser Pablo Carreno-Busta, ranked 184th in the world, but lost the second set. The Czech already played his first tournament last week, going straight to Australia in Brisbane and winning his first 2 rounds against Mikhail Kukushkin (world no. 109) and Dusan Lajovic (world no. 75), before losing in the quarter-finals to Giovanni Mpetshi Perricard (world no. 30). An interesting run for the young player, who had failed to win a single match during the group stages of the ATP Next Gen Finals in December.
