Ben Shelton of the United States seeks another semifinal appearance on Thursday as he goes head-to-head with Jack Draper of Great Britain in the quarterfinal of the 2025 Indian Wells Open. Shelton became the last American standing in a tournament held on American soil after blasting compatriot Brandon Nakashima 7-6(6) 6-1 in their fourth-round duel on Wednesday.
Shelton did not have another match with 10+ aces, but his serves effectively kept Nakashima at bay throughout the game. 29 of the 70 points Shelton scored came off his first serves, while the American also converted three breakpoint chances to seize control of the match.
Jack Draper punched his ticket to the next round after vanquishing Taylor Fritz 7-5 6-4. The Brit continues to make his mark as a rising star in men’s tennis, securing his 10th win of the season against the 2024 US Open runner-up. Boasting a 90 percent service hold in the tourney, Draper knocked over upstart Joao Fonseca 6-4 6-0, Jason Brooksby 7-5 6-4, and Fritz without dropping a single set.

Ben Shelton’s evolution from a one-dimensional big server to the multi-faceted player he is now has impressed me a lot. Of course, Draper, with his 10-2 record in the season, always poses a serious threat, but I think Shelton has the “it factor” to pull off a performance that will catapult him to the final four of the Indian Wells for the first time in his career.
