Shelton, a semi-finalist in last year’s US Open championship, hopes he can go all the way to the title in only his third main draw appearance in the hard-court Grand Slam tournament. The 21-year-old American is coming into the event with some momentum after reaching the quarterfinals of the Cincinnati Masters and semifinals of the Citi DC Open. Meanwhile, Thiem is on a four-game losing streak and hasn’t played in any hardcourt tournament leading up to the US Open. The Austrian, who earned a wildcard entry, announced early this year that he would retire after the Vienna Open in October.
