Easily one of the most tantalizing matches in Thursday’s second-round schedule, Belinda Bencic of Switzerland will battle Clara Tauson of Denmark at Arantxa Sanches Stadium.
Holding a 2-3 record in her last five matches, Bencic has slowed down a bit in the past week after a blazing hot start that had her winning at Abu Dhabi and reaching the quarterfinal at Indian Wells. She rolled into the second round in Madrid with a dominant 6-0 6-2 win over Zeynep Sonmez of Turkey, ending a two-match skid.
Similar to Bencic, Tauson also hit the wall after putting together a strong campaign through the first three months of 2025. The Dane lost to Anastasis Potapova in a grueling three-set encounter, 2-6 7-6(8) 6-3, at the 2025 Stuttgart Open, dealing her fourth setback in six matches.

Tauson has a 1-0 head-to-head series lead over Bencic, having beaten the Swiss 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the first round of the 2022 Qatar Open. In their first clay-court duel, Tauson still seems to be the more attractive pick at +135 because of his impressive record on the surface last year. Tauson reached the round of 16 of the 2024 French Open on top of a 14-5 slate that year. Bencic, meanwhile, played only her 8th clay-court match in the past 3 years as injuries derailed her campaign in the 2023 and 2024 WTA seasons. Bencic is a very capable competitor on clay, but I feel Tauson performed well despite the three-set loss to Potapova in Stuttgart.
