Belgium's Euro 2024 campaign kicks off on Monday, when they face a talented Slovakia side in Frankfurt. This version of the Belgium squad is a combination of Golden Generation players such as Kevin de Bruyne and Romelu Lukaku, plus exciting young talent including Jeremy Doku and Zeno Debast. Expectations are low compared to the last few major tournaments, but this is still a very capable squad that could do deep into the tournament.
As for Slovakia, they will be looking to improve on a disappointing Euro 2020 campaign that saw them eliminated at the group stage. They impressed in qualifying and have played well in their warm up games. However, this represents a much tougher test and they will need to be at their very best to get anything from this game.

Belgium - Slovakia: Form Analysis
Belgium have not lost since their shock 0-2 defeat to Morocco at the 2022 World Cup. That run has included 11 victories and four draws. Defence has been a key part of Belgium's success in recent games, with five clean sheets coming in their last six games. Comfortable victories over Montenegro and Luxembourg in their final warm up games means Belgium will come into the tournament full of confidence. Their best ever finish at the championships was back in 1980 when they finished third.
Slovakia are also entering the competition in excellent form, with just one defeat (at home to Austria) in their last seven games. Their final two warm up games both resulted in 4-0 victories, so they also also be feeling confident ahead of their opening game. This will be their third appearance in the European Championships. They reached the last 16 in 2016, but failed to make it out of their group in 2020.
This will be the first ever competitive meeting between Belgium and Slovakia. The teams have met in three international friendlies, with the last of those resulting in a 2-1 win for Belgium back in 2013. The other two games between the nations finished all square.

Belgium & Slovakia Squad Analysis
Belgium manager Domenico Tedesco surprised a lot of fans by leaving experienced keeper Thibaut Courtois out of his squad. Instead, Al-Qadsiah shot-stopper Koen Casteels will start between the posts behind a backline that is likely to be missing Thomas Meunier and Jan Vertonghen through injury. That means starting places for Fulham full back Timothy Castagne and Brugge centre back Maxim De Cuyper. Lukaku is certain to lead the line, with De Bruyne, Doku and Arsenal's Leandro Trossard featuring in a high class attacking midfield.
Possible starting eleven: Casteels; Faes, Witsel, De Cuyper; Castagne, Onana, Mangala, Doku; De Bruyne, Trossard; Lukaku.
Slovakia's attacking hopes will largely rest on the shoulders of Boavista's Robert Bozenik. The striker has enjoyed a fine season in Portugal, but with just 8 goals in 42 internationals, his record on the big stage leaves something to be desired. Exciting Feyenoord forward Leo Sauer is likely to be used from the bench in the latter stages is Slovakia find themselves behind. The Slovakian's only injury doubt concerns defender Denis Vavro. However, the experienced duo of David Hancko and Milan Skriniar gives them one of the most solid backlines in the tournament.
