France are many people's favorites for Euro 2024 glory, but they face a tricky test in their opening game against an in-form Austrian side. Man for man, Didier Deschamps probably has the strongest squad in the tournament, however trying to get the very best out of those players can be a tricky task. Nevertheless, another other than an appearance in the final will be seen as a major failure by fans.
Austria are potential dark horses for the competition, but they have been placed in an extremely tough group. They are big underdogs to get anything from their opening game. Their other group games (against Poland and the Netherlands) look slightly less intimidating, and they will be looking to pick up at least four points from those fixtures.

Austria - France: Form Analysis
Since their heartbreaking shootout defeat to Argentina in the 2022 World Cup final, France have lost just two of their 14 games (both to Germany). However, many of their victories have been against relative minnows, such as Gibraltar, Luxembourg and the Republic of Ireland. At the last European Championships, France cruised through the group stage, before suffering a shock shootout defeat to Switzerland in the last 16.
Austria were also eliminated in the last 16 at Euro 2020, going down 2-1 to eventual champions Italy after extra time. They will be one of the form teams in Germany, having won six of their last seven games. Their only defeat in the last 22 months was a narrow 2-3 home loss at Belgium last year.
These two sides have met on 25 previous occasions, with France leading the head to head 13-9. Their last encounter came in the 2022 Nations League group stage, when goals from Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud gave France a comfortable 2-0 victory. Austria's last success in the fixture was in 2010 World Cup qualification, and that remains their only victory over the French since 1970.

Austria & France Squad Analysis
French manager Didier Deschamps seems likely to pick Liverpool centre half Ibrahima Konate ahead of William Saliba, despite the Arsenal defender enjoying a superb club season. Aurélien Tchouaméni is set to miss the game, which could mean veteran midfielder Ngolo Kante regains his place in midfield. Deschamps also has to choose between Giroud and Marcus Thuram for the lone striker role, with Giroud's tournament experience likely to give him the final nod. The big strength of this French side lies in attacking midfield, where Kylian Mbappe (arguably the best player in world football) will be joined by veteran Antoine Griezmann and the exciting Ousmane Dembele.

Austria boss Ralf Rangnick will be without key midfielders David Alaba and Xaver Schlager for the tournament. That means Dortmund's Marcel Sabitzer and Munich's Konrad Laimerwill be asked to pull the strings in the middle of the park, with Nicolas Seiwald given the holding role despite a stop-start season for Leipzig. Up front, Michael Gregoritsch will lead the line, but expect to see maverick striker Marko Arnautovic make regular appearances from the bench.
