The Atlanta Braves will try to continue their winning run when they open a fresh three-game series with the Pittsburgh Pirates on Friday at PNC Park. The Braves will enter their series opener with the Pirates on high morale after claiming the last two games of their previous series with the Chicago Cubs. Atlanta rookie pitcher AJ Smith-Shawver played marvelous in his first career start, blanking the Cubs for 4 1/3 innings with four strikeouts. The Braves upped their record to 29-18, six games below the current NL East leader Philadelphia Phillies (34-17). The Pirates will try to score a win after losing the last two games of their series with the San Francisco Giants. The Pirates were up 6-2 entering the 8th inning when Matt Chapman unloaded a three-run homer to spark five runs for the Giants in the penultimate inning. With the loss, the Pirates moved down to 10-14 at home and 23-28 overall, good for fourth place in the NL Central standings.
