Former US Open runner-up Leylah Fernandez vies for a spot in the women’s singles quarterfinals on Wednesday as she squares off with American Ashlyn Krueger in the second round of the 2024 Eastbourne International. Fernandez barged into the second round of this WTA 500 grass-court tournament after topping Barbora Krejcikova in a three-set tussle 6-2 3-6 6-2 on Monday. Fernandez, who is coming off a quarterfinal stint in the Birmingham event a week ago, won 81 per cent of the first serves 5 of 9 (58 per cent) breakpoint chances against the No.7 seed Krejcikova. Meanwhile, Krueger has now racked up three consecutive wins since the qualifying rounds as she moves one win away from entering the quarterfinal stage of the Eastbourne International. Like Fernandez, Krueger has to go through a three-set battle with Viktorija Golubic 6-1 6-7(7) 7-5 to advance into the round of 16. Krueger fired six aces and won 66 per cent of the first serves. She also claimed six of nine breakpoint opportunities.
