Coming off a crushing finals loss to Mirra Andreeva, Aryna Sabalenka embarks on a new campaign on Thursday against Viktoriya Tomova of Bulgaria in the second round of the 2025 Miami Open.
Sabalenka fell short of a title again after losing to Russian teenage sensation Mirra Andreeva 2-6 6-4 6-3 in a hotly-contested final at the 2025 Indian Wells Open. The world’s No.1 had played top-notch tennis throughout the two-week event that gathered the best tennis player on the planet. Sabalenka posted straight-set victories over Mccartney Kessler, Lucia Bronzetti, Sonay Kartal, Liudmila Samsonova and US Open winner Madison Keys to book her third final appearance this year. It even looked like Sabalenka was on her way to another title after securing first set with a score of 6-1. However, the complexion of the match changed when Andreeva launched a furious comeback run that left Sabalenka and the tennis world shellshocked. Andreeva won her first Indian Wells title instead to become the first teen to win back-to-back WTA 1000 title.
Tomova advanced to the second round with a three-set win over Cathy McNally 6-3 2-6 6-3. The win gave the Bulgarian lass only her fifth win in 12 matches this season. Tomova also reached the second round of the 2025 Indian Wells Open, beating Olga Danilovic 6-2 6-3 in the opening round before stumbling against Maria Sakkari 6-0, 6-3.
