Sabalenka advanced to the second round after decimating former Grand Slam champion Sloane Stephens 6-3 6-2. The current world’s No.1 needed just over an hour to finish off Stephen, capturing 22 first-serve points and five breakpoints. Maneiro also posted a straight-set victory over Sonay Kartal of Great Britain 6-1 7-6(5). After obliterating Kartal in the first set 6-1, the Spaniard faced resistance from her British opponent in the second set, which was decided in a tiebreaker. Maneiro busted out exceptional shot-making to ice the match for good. With the victory, Maneiro reached the second round of the Australian Open for the first time in her career.
