Sabalenka played in the championship match of last year's US Open, bowing to Coco Gauff 6-2, 3-6, 2-6. Mertens will have a chance to reach the quarterfinals of the US Open for a third time, if she can replicate the same level of tennis she showcased in her upset victory over former US Open finalist and No.14 seed Madison Keys 6-7(5) 7-5 6-4. Mertens scored 124 points in the match, 70 of which came from service points and 54 from return points. The Belgian also tallied 23 winners and broke her opponent's serves five times.
