The Arizona Diamondbacks (41-44 SU, 41-44 ATS) play the second game of their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers (53-33 SU, 43-43 ATS) after coughing up a late lead in the opener. Arizona appeared to have overcome Los Angeles in the late innings, striking for three runs in the last three innings but giving up two in the bottom of the ninth to fall short.
And that both speaks to the Diamondbacks’ ability to challenge the Dodgers and why they’re 12 wins behind Los Angeles in the standings. Arizona has actually been a thorn in Los Angeles’ side the past two seasons, winning six of the past 10 meetings against the Dodgers. But the bullpen isn’t very consistent, and the Diamondbacks haven’t been able to count on them to keep opponents at bay. Last time out, the Dodgers scored four runs in their final three turns at bat.

Arizona plans to throw another bullpen game, which seems par for the course when it faces the Dodgers. The Diamondbacks almost managed to get away with it last time out, but the bullpen really isn’t a strength for this team. The Dodgers also haven’t had the best pitching as of late, getting just five innings or less in their past four games.
Gavin Stone went the distance in a brilliant showing last time, and the Dodgers would love to see him give the bullpen the day off again. That’s not likely to happen, but going seven or more innings would put Arizona behind the eight-ball. Stone did pitch his worst game of the season against Arizona in May, but he’s looked dynamite ever since that day. With the Diamondbacks’ bullpen giving up plenty of runs, the Dodgers should look the part of a division leader here. Our prediction for Arizona vs. Los Angeles is Dodgers -1.5.
